The Application of High Power LED in Signal Lighting

With the widely application of LED in many products, high power LED is commonly used as light source in traffic, railway and electronic equipment signal lamps. Compared with ordinary LED, its high power consumption contribute to a large amount of heat, larger lumen, thus enable a brighter illumination.


On account of the high power consumption, there are many strictly requirement when select high power LEDs for signal lamps. Generally speaking, ordinary LED doesn’t comply with the requirement for signal lamp for the following reasons: (1) high power LED demands to use MCPCB as the fixing board, but ordinary LED always adopts epoxy resin; (2) Ordinary LED is able to adopts wave soldering machine or handmade soldering, while high power LED needs to use surface mount technology (SMT) soldering machine. (3)Surface mounting devices (SMD) need to be used as matched electronic devices in high power LED. (4) To realize the highly integration of its electronic devices, high power LED adopts surface mounting technology, which lead to a small amount of lamps and power supply. This can not make true by ordinary LED. (5) Compared with ordinary LED, high power ones bear a perfect heat tolerance performance and wonderful heat dissipation effect. (6) High power LED has a long life span and a more concentrated light beam than ordinary one.


As a general rule, there are fewer diodes and branches in high power LED circuit, making it to use power supply that provides constant current in every branch to make sure that every LED has the same power supply environment. If one or two LED circuit is out of order, they won’t do any infection on other branches. At the same time, because of the good heat dissipation performance for high power LED, node temperature is comparatively lower than ordinary LED, enabling it to have a longer life span. Furthermore, high power LED can support much larger operating current, about more than ten folds compare to ordinary one. Thus, high power LED won’t be influenced, but ordinary LEDs will be damaged, so attentions should be paid when choosing proper LEDs for signal lamps. From all the reasons stated above, we are able to draw a conclusion that high power LED has a prevalent application on signal lamps.
